Every season, we conclude with a final clearout of our nursery plants. Managing plant supply is a complex task; with plants taking up to two years to grow, we need to predict demand well in advance. Sometimes, a particular plant is in high demand, and we sell out. Other times, we find ourselves with a surplus.

Rather than let these extra plants go to waste, we use them to give back. Each year, we donate thousands of plants across the South Island, primarily in mid and north Canterbury. These donations support local environmental charities, schools, and non-profit organisations, helping them achieve their sustainable goals.

In 2024 alone, we proudly donated over 20,000 plants. These plants were either directly planted by organisations or used for fundraising efforts to support their causes.

How Your Organisation Can Benefit
If you're part of a non-profit organisation that could use free plants, we'd love to hear from you! No promises that we have 'secounds' stock right now but get in touch and we'll let you know.
Here's how to get involved:

  • Join Our Free Plants Email List
Email us at [email protected] with the subject line ‘Free Plants Email List’. We’ll add you to our list and send occasional updates (once or twice a year) about available plant donations.
  • Request Plants Now
If your organisation has an upcoming project or event, we might be able to sponsor plants for your needs. Contact Stella at [email protected] with details about your project, the number of plants you’re looking for, and any specific varieties required.

Our Commitment to Community and the Environment
At Riverside Horticulture, our purpose extends beyond business. We’re here to help create a sustainable future—environmentally and within our community. Each year, we’re inspired by the impact these donations make and the stories of transformation they bring.

Share Your Success
If you've received plants from us in the past, we'd love to see the results! Please send photos of your projects to [email protected].

Thank you for joining us in our purpose of enabling the sustainable future of our wonderful communities and the environments they live in. Together, we’re making a lasting impact.
