Project Overview

The Halo Project is a significant conservation initiative focused on restoring native ecosystems in Otago. The project, which includes the Source to Sea works, engages with local residents to plant, fence, and restore waterways, wetlands, and forest habitats throughout Coastal Otago, from West Harbour-Mount Cargill to the Waikouaiti River. By creating a network of healthy, thriving habitats, the project aims to enhance biodiversity and ecological connectivity across the region.

Project Scope and Challenges

The Halo Project involves planting 100,000 eco-sourced seedlings over a four-year period from 2021 to 2024. The focus is on re-establishing native plant communities in areas that have suffered from habitat degradation and invasive species. Challenges include selecting appropriate planting sites, managing large-scale planting logistics, and ensuring ongoing maintenance and monitoring to support the successful establishment of the planted species.

Riverside Horticulture's Approach

Riverside Horticulture was chosen to supply eco-sourced seedlings for The Halo Project due to their expertise in native plant propagation and their commitment to environmental sustainability. The seedlings are sourced from local, naturally occurring plants, ensuring their suitability for the Otago environment and supporting the project's goals of ecological restoration and biodiversity enhancement.

Outcome

The Halo Project aims to significantly improve the ecological health of Otago’s coastal landscapes by restoring native habitats and creating ecological corridors. The re-vegetation efforts will benefit local wildlife, support soil stabilization, and contribute to overall environmental resilience. Riverside Horticulture’s involvement has been key in providing high-quality seedlings and supporting the project’s objectives, demonstrating their dedication to conservation and sustainable land management.
